Android apps · live data from USGS, EMSC, the Smithsonian, NOAA & NASA
Earth, live.
Feel the planet move.
Four free Android apps for a restless planet. See every earthquake within minutes, follow the volcanoes erupting right now, track hurricanes and typhoons along their forecast path, and find out where wildfires are burning.
Not an official warning service. In an emergency, follow your local authorities.

Quake
Earthquakes, live and near you
Earth, live. Did you feel that?
Felt something? Quake puts every earthquake on a live map within minutes, with how big and how deep it was, how far it is from you, and where the data came from.

- 2
- global catalogues side by side: USGS and EMSC
- Live mapEarthquakes around the world, sized by magnitude and shaded by how recent they are.
- Near youThe quakes inside your own radius, with distance and direction from your place.
- Every detailMagnitude, depth, local time and the felt-intensity estimate where one is published.
- Source and ageEach event says who reported it and how old the data is: "USGS · 4 min ago".
- AlertsYour own magnitude and distance limits, with quiet hours for the night.
- WidgetsThe latest quake and the biggest of the day on your home screen.

Storm
Hurricanes, typhoons and severe storms
Earth, live. Where's it heading?
Where is it heading? Storm follows every hurricane, typhoon and cyclone on the planet, with the official forecast track and cone, its wind speed and category, and how close it will come to you.
- ~85
- tropical storms and stronger around the world in a typical year
- 119 km/h
- wind at which a storm becomes a hurricane or typhoon
- 1–5
- Saffir-Simpson categories, by wind speed
- 6 h
- between regular hurricane advisories
- Active stormsEvery named tropical storm, hurricane, typhoon and cyclone, worldwide.
- Forecast trackThe official track and cone of uncertainty, with where it is expected in 1 to 5 days.
- Wind and categorySustained wind, pressure and category, explained in plain words.
- Near youHow close each storm is forecast to pass your place, and when.
- Source and ageEach storm says which centre issued the advisory and how old it is.
- AlertsA notification when a storm forms or its track comes inside your radius.

Volcano
Eruptions and alert levels
Earth, live. What's erupting?
What's erupting right now? Volcano follows the restless mountains of the world, with the latest activity reports, official alert levels and the story of each volcano.
- ~1,350
- potentially active volcanoes on land
- 40–50
- volcanoes erupting at any one time, typically
- 0–8
- the explosivity index every eruption is rated on
- 4
- aviation colour codes, green to red
- Erupting nowVolcanoes with eruptions under way, and those showing new unrest.
- Alert levelsOfficial aviation colour codes and ground alert levels, where observatories publish them.
- Activity reportsThe weekly volcanic activity report, short and in plain words.
- Every volcanoType, height, last known eruption and eruption history for each one.
- MapThe world's active volcanoes on one map, with the restless ones lit up.
- AlertsA notification when a volcano you follow changes its alert level.

Fire
Wildfires and satellite hotspots
Earth, live. Where's it burning?
See where it's burning. Fire maps active wildfires and the heat that satellites pick up from orbit, tells you how far the nearest fire is, and shows which way the wind is taking the smoke.
- 375 m
- squares the VIIRS satellites map heat in
- ~3 h
- from satellite pass to the map, for most hotspots
- 2000
- the year the MODIS fire record begins
- 1 km
- rounding of your location before any request
- HotspotsHeat detected by NASA's satellites, mapped within hours of each pass.
- Big firesNamed wildfires and their status, from NASA and GDACS.
- Near youThe nearest fire, how far it is and in which direction.
- Wind and smokeWhich way the wind is blowing at your place and the air-quality forecast.
- Source and ageEach hotspot says which satellite saw it and how long ago.
- AlertsA notification when a fire is detected inside your own radius.
Data: NASA FIRMS (VIIRS & MODIS), NASA EONET, GDACS, Open-Meteo

Built the same way
Straight from the source. Nothing about you.
No account
Open the app and it works. There's nothing to sign up for.
No tracking
No ads, no cookies, no tracking. Your location stays on your phone, rounded to about 1 km before any forecast request. Privacy policy.
Source and age, always
Every event says who reported it and how old it is. When a feed fails, you see the last good copy, marked as out of date.
Made to match
All four share one look with their sister apps from Near Space: dark, compact, tabs at the bottom and home-screen widgets.

Questions
Are the apps free?
Yes, all four are free to download, with no ads.
When can I download them?
The apps are coming to Google Play for Android. Sign up below and we'll email you when they arrive.
Are these official warning apps?
No. They show public data from geological surveys, observatories and space agencies, with the source and age on every event. They don't replace official warnings. In an emergency, follow your local authorities.
Do I need an account?
No. Open the app and it works. There is nothing to sign up for.
Do the apps need my location?
No, it is optional. With it, each app works out what is near you on your phone. Without it, you choose a place by name. Where a forecast needs your position, it is rounded to about 1 km first.
Do the apps collect my data?
No. There are no ads, no tracking and no accounts. See the privacy policy.
What happens when I'm offline or a feed is down?
Each app keeps the last good copy of every feed and shows it, clearly marked as out of date, until fresh data arrives.
Where does the data come from?
From public sources: the US Geological Survey, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, the US National Hurricane Center, NASA, GDACS and Open-Meteo.
